Unique PCD hinge drill

TOOL DESCRIPTION

It is used in the production of furniture made of lightweight board with chip board inserts.

The development of the PCD drill by our constructors stems from the fact that one of the largest furniture manufacturers has been searching for a drill with high efficiency and low cutting resistance. In this case, cellular board with chipboard inserts was used for the production of furniture. The problem occurring during machining was that the chipboard inserts were torn out. With the use of standard drills with diamond tips, high cutting resistances were created, having a destructive impact on the bonding. Carbide drills with low cutting resistance, for that matter, were characterised by low efficiency. Neither of these solutions was satisfactory.

For that reason, the company turned to us with a specific goal in mind: we were to create a drill capable of drilling a minimum of eight thousand holes. As a result of our work, we presented a solution whose service life triply exceeded the customer’s expectations in terms of the number of holes made. We prepared a recess drill with a unique blade geometry and manufacturing technology used nowhere else in Europe.

We developed the geometry of the drill with polycrystalline diamond tips, where only the element stabilising the rotary movement was made of sintered carbide. Unique in this tool is the use of double the number of spot cutters with special geometry and the chip breaker on the front face. The result was a tool with low cutting resistance for better productivity.

The PCD hinge drill is highly effective in processing wood-based materials. Its special advantage is the high quality of hole edges in materials with various veneers.
